An Horse originally began as a solo project by Kate Cooper, who is the principle songwriter.[4] Tegan and Sara met Cooper while touring Australia, after playing in a record store where she worked. Sara invited An Horse along for their US tour. The tour was An Horse's first time playing in the United States.[5] The band has quickly gained popularity, in part due to this tour, leading reviewers to note that they "came out of nowhere".[6]

An Horse has generally received favorable reviews for their first EP, Not Really Scared.[4][6]
