Ammovouno (Greek, Modern: Αμμόβουνο meaning sand mountain), older form: -on is a village in the northwestern part of the Evros Prefecture in Greece Ammovouno is in the municipal district of Fylakio and the municipality of Kyprinos. Ammovouno is located west-southwest of Edirne, Turkey, west of Orestiada north of Soufli, 141 km north-northeast of Alexandroupoli and east of the town and the Bulgarian border. Ammovouno is on the left bank of the Arda, a tributary of Evros.

Ammovouno was ruled by the Ottoman Empire until the Balkan Wars of 1913. The village joined Bulgaria since it was invaded and administered by the Bulgarians until after the Greco-Turkish War when it was finally ceded to Greece. After World War II and the Greek Civil War, many of its buildings were rebuilt. Some of its residents moved to other parts of Greece and the world. The population saw a dramatic decline between 1981 and 2001. Electricity and automobiles arrived in the 1960s, it was linked with pavement in the late-20th century, television arrived in the 1980s. Internet and computers arrived in the late-1990s.
