Amerigo Vespucci (disambiguation)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The explorer and cartographer Amerigo Vespucci was the first person to suggest that the New World discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492 was not an extension of Asia, but rather an entirely new continent. The continents of North and South America (and, by extension, the United States of America) are named after the feminized Latin version of his first name.
His full name has been preserved by other applications:
- Peretola Airport in Florence, Italy, officially renamed "Amerigo Vespucci Airport" in 1990.
- Amerigo Vespucci, a tall ship of the Marina Militare based in Livorno, Italy.
- Américo Vespucio, one of the main avenues in Santiago, Chile
