Talk:Amazon Stonehenge
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
?? This article needs clarification:
1) For any object on the ground, the shadow disappears when the sun is directly above it.
2) The site is close to the equator (2.5 degrees north), so to speak of "the shortest day of the year" is rather strange, since all the days there are very close to 12 hours long, whatever the time of year.
3) At latitude 2.5N, the sun is not directly over anything on 21st December. On that date, it is about 23 degrees south of the equator, so it is not overhead at Calcoene, even at noon.
4) It is possible that a stone has been identified with one or more straight sides which are judged to have been artificially prepared and/or aligned and that the sun lies close to the plane of one or more of these sides at some time judged to be significant (e.g. sunrise, noon or sunset on the day of the December solstice). But this is not clear from the text above. (Nor is it clear, since there is no reference to a statistical analysis or indication of the accuracy of the alleged alignment that, among 127 stones, it is unlikely that such an alignment might occur by chance).
Just moving whoever's comments to the discussion page where they belong.--Elatanatari 04:45, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
This page should probably be merged with that for Calçoene, since the British seem to consider the term "henge" proprietary, and so would take issue with the description of this monument as an "Amazon Stonehenge", which would be inaccurate in any case. "Calçoene" is a stub as it is, and mostly devoted to this monument. Feel free to delete this paragraph after a formal request for merger has been posted, which I do not know how to do - M.D. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.120.96.148 (talk) 04:12, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
