[edit] Fictional character biography

Alva Xar is a bald, male humanoid native of the planet Rann. 1,000 years before the present time he ruled the planet, but was overthrown. He explicitly ruled the city state of Zared. This city's war with Ranagar devastates much of the planet.

Alva places himself in suspended animation in one of Zared's underground storage areas. This is in order to hide from his enemies. He is revived in the present day during one of Rann's many invasions. He intendes to rule Rann with the aid of a new weapon. He first transports the memories of Strange's love, Alanna, into an Earth woman. The intent is to fool Adam into thinking Alanna is on Earth, thus he will find no reason to come back to Rann and oppose Alva.

Alva conquers Rann easily, but his weapon, which functions on Zeta energy, ends up back on Earth. A cloud-creature emerges and freezes everyone on the planet. Adam Strange is the only one immune to the effects due to the Zeta energy in his own body. Adam uses the weapon to re-capture the creature and Earth's people are released from its grip. Alanna's double regains her true memories. Adam returns to Rann to confront Alva.

Adam and Alva both have identical superweapons. Fighting against Alva's telepathy, Adam causes the cloud-being to be released, which freezes everyone on Rann. Alva falls victim too. Adam destroys both weapons. The Rangarans put Alva into prison.

Xar returns several times to fight Strange; his final appearance was in Green Lantern (2nd series) #144 (September 1981).
