[edit] Summary
The title page of the Altair BASIC source listing. It shows that Paul Allen, Bill Gates and Monte Davidoff wrote this version between February 9 and April 27 [1975]. The listing was found by Professor Harry Lewis and is now in the Harvard University library. The complete listing is around 100 pages long.
Early text editors required the source file to have line numbers. It was common practice to initially increment the lines by 10. This made it easier to insert additional lines.
- 00200 to 00320 - Printer format.
- 00340 - Sub Title for header on each page.
- 00360 to 00760 - Author names and dates, list of things to do.
- 00780 to 01081 - Constant definitions, partially obscured.
More information about the listing can be found here: http://www.interact-sw.co.uk/altair/other%20versions/ian.htm
The uneven vertical character alignment in this listing suggests this was printed on a drum-type line printer.
This is part of a large (8 foot high) wall display at the entrance to the "STARTUP: Albuquerque and the Personal Computer Revolution" wing of the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science. The museum allows photography by visitors with no restrictions. (I checked with the Public Relations Manager before my visit.) There is only a trivial amount of source code visible and by itself would not be creative enough for a copyright.
