Alpheus Hyatt (April 5, 1838January 15, 1902) was an American zoologist and palaeontologist.

Hyatt was born in Washington, D.C. and graduated from Yale in 1862. He fought in the US Civil War, reaching the rank of Captain. Studied under Louis Agassiz. Followed Lamarckism. He edited American Naturalist between 1867 and 1870. Professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology 1870-1888. He established a laboratory for the study of Marine Biology in Annisquam, Massachusetts. The River Road building gave him access to the Annisquam River, a salt water estuary. This enterprise was moved to Woods Hole and became the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Hyatt was the father of famed sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington.
