The All-Ireland Championship was run on a provincial basis as usual. The Munster Championship saw Cork emerge victorious and book a place in the All-Ireland semi-final, while Kilkenny captured the Leinster Championship to book their semi-final spot. Galway, who faced no competition in Connacht, and Antrim, who faced no competition in Ulster, played against each other in an All-Ireland "quarter-final" which would decide the third team to take part in the semi-final. London were nominated to meet Cork in the semi-final also.
[edit] All-Ireland Hurling Final
The All-Ireland Hurling Final between Cork and Kilkenny on September 3, 1972 was an historic occasion as it was the first All-Ireland final to be broadcast by Radio Telefís Éireann in colour television. The build-up to the game was more exciting than usual. Cork had defeated Kilkenny in 1966, while Kilkenny claimed the title in 1969. This was the decider.
The day itself was exceptionally sunny with over 66,000 people packing into Croke Park. It was the largest attendance for an All-Ireland final in the 1970s. Mick Crotty of Kilkenny registered the first score of the day, and Ray Cummins of Cork replied immediately with a goal for the Leesiders. Liam 'Chunkey' O'Brien and Eddie Keher scored three points between them to put Kilkenny in the lead, however, these were shortly cancelled out by Charlie McCarthy who recorded three more points for Cork. At half-time Cork led by 2-8 to Kilkenny's 0-12.
In the second half, Cork scored three goals from Ray Cummins, Mick Malone and Seánie O'Leary. With thirteen minutes left in the game the score stood at Cork 5-11, Kilkenny 1-15. It looked as if the Leesiders had avenged their 1969 defeat, however Cork failed to score in the last period while Kilkenny added a further 2-9 to their score. Eddie Keher of Kilkenny scored a record 2-9 in total; one of his goals came from the sideline. At the final whistle the score was Kilkenny 3-24, Cork 5-11.
