[edit] Aliwan Festival
The Aliwan Festival is an annual cultural extravaganza organized by Manila Broadcasting Company and the Cultural Center of the Philippines in cooperation with the cities of Manila and Pasay – dance in its myriad forms once more takes centrestage, as interpreted in the festival context by contingents from various regions all over the country.
The Aliwan Fiesta initially a visual extravaganza offered by the station to the public for Christmas, but which evolved into a sizzling summer spectacular that brings out the multi-faceted creativity of the ebullient, fun-loving Pinoy in his many incarnations. Literally from Aparri to Jolo, people’s entertainment has, for the past several years, found fruition in the biggest and grandest Philippine festival ever.
Every summer, more than 3,000 dancers, musicians, craftsmen, and even acrobats compete in the festival’s competitions for streetdancing, float design, and the search for Reyna ng Aliwan. Performing through a four-kilometer stretch along Roxas Boulevard, from Quirino Grandstand to the CCP Complex, they labour under the sweltering heat of summer, fully made-up and costume-clad, gyrating to the percussive beat, climbing, jumping, and flipping in perfect unison.
