A Savage War of Peace: Algeria 1954-1962 is considered the definitive history[who?] of the Algerian War of Independence against the French. Alistair Horne wrote it in 1977. The book was in demand by generals fighting the war in Iraq as a manual for counterinsurgency and was out of print until the New York Review of Books republished it in 2006.
