[edit] Rear/mid engine
A recent edit includes the often stated rumour that the prototype was rear engined, or that the Montreal was designed with this configuration in mind. According to designer Marcello Gandini, the Montreal was never planned with the engine behind the driver. The slats were simply cosmetic elements to break up the large sheet metal areas behind the doors. This is according to Luigi Giuliani's book "Alfa Romeo Montreal" (ISBN 88-7911-072-1, published 1992). Style Auto no. 30 (1972) also has two pictures of the prototype with its hood open. Inside, there's an I4 Nord engine. See http://break-left.org/alfa/montreal/imgs/motor_prototype.jpg. I'm removing the reference. If someone has reliable sources other than contemporary car magazines mentioning a rear engine, please raise your hand. TorW (talk) 15:11, 23 January 2008 (UTC)
