Alf Padgham and many of his brothers and cousins had a close association with the Cantelupe Golf Club, the Artisan Golf club whose home is the Royal Ashdown Forest Golf Club,Forest Row,East Sussex.Alf is the only Artisan ever to have won the Open Championship, although his fellow Cantelupe member Abe Mitchell was known as the best golfer never to have won the Open (before Monty that is!!!).Abe Mitchell was also the personal professional of Samuel Ryder, he of Ryder Cup fame. Abe also played at Royal Ashdown Forest Golf club and was the model for the figure on top of the Ryder Cup. Mitchell finished his career at Verulam (St. Albans) Golf Club. The Cantelupe Golf Club is the second oldest Artisan golf club in the UK (Westward Hoe being the oldest) and was founded in 1892. The Cantelupe name is nothing to do with melons! The name originates from a local Earl.
