Alfrēds Rubiks

Alfrēds Rubiks (born September 24, 1935 in Daugavpils) is a Latvian politician. He served as Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Riga City Soviet 1984 to 1990, and is commonly referred to as the last Communist Mayor of Riga. As head of the Latvian Communist Party in 1991 he opposed Latvian independence from the USSR and was imprisoned for attempting to overthrow the new government,[1][2] Despite his incarceration, Rubiks was a candidate in the 1996 presidential election but lost to incumbent Guntis Ulmanis.[3] Rubiks was released in 1997 for good behavior.[4]
