Talk:Alexithymia/Comments

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The etiology part of this article (the McDougall 'disaffectation' theory and all) sounds a lot like Kanner's 'refrigerator mother' one on autism.

It is increasingly clear[who?] that conditions such as Asperger Syndrome, autism (and we could include alexithymia with these too) span not from emotional alienation from the parents by the young child or infant because of their lack of love or attention, but by neurological causes due to genetic particularities.

Therefore I doubt this article deserves a star quality rating either in the psychology or general health section.

(Although it does describe the condition very well, the etiology part is lacking)

Please disregard the above editor's comments, as it is completely false to draw a similarity to Kanner and 'refrigerator mother' (neither of which are mentioned or even hinted at in the article!). Nevertheless, I have removed one unsourced sentence pointing to a parental role, and added the following summary:

Although environmental, neurological, and genetic factors are each involved, the role of genetic and environmental factors for developing alexithymia is still unclear.[1] The results from a large population-based sample of Danish twins suggest that genetic factors have a noticeable and similar impact on all facets of alexithymia. While the results suggested a moderate influence of shared environmental factors, results are in concordance with the general finding that environmental influences on most psychological traits are primarily of the nonshared rather than the shared type.[2]

This article is now one of the best referenced, detailed summaries of alexithymia on the WWW. It therefore deserves a significantly higher rating, especially with the addition of the genetic research above.
