[edit] Laughed off?
Surprised that this is the first comment! Question: was the prospect of Rangers winning the league last year "laughed off for the previous three months by the Scottish media?" Maybe people were reading different papers from me, but as I recall it, the papers were saying that O'Neill's Celtic were too old, that one more win would be too much for them, that O'Neill's concentration wasn't there because of his wife's illness etc. Didn't Rangers have quite a healthy lead over Celtic at one point, which they squandered in the last few games before the spilt? I do remember that some of the papers "handed" Celtic the title after they went 5 points ahead with 4 games to go, but I also remember some papers saying that this would lead them into a false sense of security. - Yes, you’re right there Camillus. The media certainly wrote off Rangers chances after Celtic won at Ibrox with five games left, but then so did most Rangers fans!
- They certainly weren’t written off three months before the end of the season. In fact, as you say, it was more Celtic who were being written off, especially after Rangers won at Celtic Park. Forbsey 01:35, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] First Scottish team?
Wikipedia's page on the Champions League, echoing the official information from UEFA, states that the CL began in 1955. Hibernian FC reached the semi final that year. Dundee, Dundee United and Rangers have also reached the semi final. Celtic have won the competition. Unless the final or semi final is somehow not "the knockout stage", this "first Scottish team" line really must be excised.
- I've tried to edit it to reflect that it was the best European Cup run since 1993, when Rangers reached a group stage for the last eight clubs. I think the progress was also noteworthy in the sense that Scottish clubs have a terrible record in group stages, or indeed the national team in World Cup and European Championship finals. 212.113.23.124 14:18, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

Isn't this just a wee bit ungenerous? While McLeish may not go down in history as Rangers best or favourite manager, surely his successes with Rangers (7 trophies in 5 years), outstrip anything he achieved at MFC or Hibs? Camillus (talk) 16:44, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
