A.G. Edwards was the son of Ninian Edwards, the first territorial governor of Illinois and the third elected governor. A.G. Edwards had three siblings: Ninian Wirt Edwards, who married Elizabeth Todd, wife of Abraham Lincoln; Benjamin Edwards, a lawyer whose long-time law partner was John Todd Stuart, Lincoln's first law partner; and Julia, who married Daniel Pope Cook, the second owner of the first newspaper in Illinois and for whom Cook County (Chicago) was named.
