Huj (Arabic: هوج) is a former Palestinian village located 15km northeast of Gaza City. It has been identified as the ancient Philistine town of Oga. Its total land area amounted to approximately 22,000 dunams of which about 3/4 was in Arab ownership while the remaining 1/4 belonged to Jewish owners and the general public. According to a 1945 census, Huj had a population of 1,040 inhabitants.
[edit] War of 1948
During the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, Egyptian forces took control of Huj. Israel's Negev Brigade captured the town on May 31, 1948. The town's inhabitants fled toward the Gaza Strip and in 1998 numbered nearly 6,000.
