- This article is about a Regent. For the physician, see Muvaffak.
Al-Muwaffak (842-June 2, 891) was between 875 and 891 the Regent of the Abbasids Caliph al-Mutamid.
Abu Ahmad ibn al-Muwaffaq al-Mutawakkil was a brother of the Caliph al-Mutamid (870-892) and assumed the leadership of the imperial administration in Baghdad in 875. Soon, he replaced the weak al-Mutamid largely by ousting the government.
Under Muwaffaq, the Caliphate Abbasids again stabilized. He put down the uprising in southern Iraq Sandj in 883, increased control over the provinces and also fought the Tulunids of Syria vigorously.
Suffering increasingly from elephantiasis, his son Abu l-Ahmad Abbas took charge of government business from 889. After the death of al-Muwaffaq on June 5, 891, his offices were officially transferred to l-Abu Abbas Ahmad al-Mutamid. Later Abu l-Ahmad Abbas as al-Mutadid (892-902) became the Caliph.
