In 1868, His Royal Highness, Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Ulster and Kent, was seriously wounded in an attempted assassination attempt whilst on a royal visit to Australia.
The Australian Colonies of the 1860's were deeply divided along sectarian lines, predominately between [[Protestantism}Protestants]] and Roman Catholics. The colonial governments were not immune to the effects of sectarianism either, as from the 1850's they moved to cut funding to religious run schools and began to create a public education system. Such actions bought heavy resistance from all sides, particularily the increasingly Irish dominated Catholic bishops who were very outspoken on the issue. [1] This situation was excacebated by "increasing concerns throughout the British empire at the course of Irish affairs."[1] Throughout 1866 and 1867, Irish Republican Brotherhood, or "Fenians" unsuccessfully undertook an armed uprising and other actions within Ireland as well as 2 attempted invasions of Canada by the Fenian Brotherhood in the United States, all aimed at forcing the British Government to cede Irish independence.[2]
