Kollsman-type barometric aircraft altimeter set at 75 ft (23 m) showing a pressure of 29.87 in (1011.5 hPa). This altimeter is monuted in a console at a radio station.

Taken 03rd August 2005 at 17:58 MDT (03rd August 2005 at 23:58Z) at Cambridge Bay Airport, Nunavut, Canada.

Instrumentet har tre visere, der aflæses omtremt som urvisere:

  • Den lange viser, som her peger på "knap 1", angiver antal hundrede engelske fod, i dette eksempel ca. 75 fod, eller 23 meter.
  • Den korte, brede viser angiver antal tusinde fod
  • Den lange, tynde viser der ender i en lille trekant øverst, angiver antal titusinder fod.
Højdemåleren virker ved at måle det statiske lufttryk, så for at kunne vise korrekt højde, skal den kende lufttrykket ved havets overflade. Man drejer på knappen nederst til venstre, indtil tallet i ruden til højre svarer til det relevante lufttryk.
