Air Gumbo is a planned low-cost airline that has been in a launching phase for over 10 years. It was founded on February 20, 1998 by Ralston Champagnie and despite filing for approval with the United States Department of Transportation in 2007, the airline has yet to commence operations. In 2003, the airline planned a fleet consisting of seven Boeing 737s.[1] By 2007 those plans had changed to Bombardier regional jets for its domestic and Caribbean service and the Airbus A330-200/300 for eventual long haul international service.[2] All plans were first derailed in 2001 by the events of September 11 and then again by Hurricane Katrina.[3]
The airline plans to differentiate itself from other low-cost airlines by serving gumbo onboard and playing jazz music in passenger waiting areas. Aircraft are planned to be painted like a huge bowl of crawfish filled gumbo.[1]
