Ain't Nothin' Goin' on But the Rent
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Ain't Nothin' Goin' on But The Rent" is a controversial hit song recorded by late R&B recording artist Gwen Guthrie, released as a single in 1986.
The song was controversial in that the woman in the song can be viewed as shallow and a "gold digger", since she will only love a man if he's rich and he has a job. The song has a lyrical interpolation from Billy Preston's 1974 hit, "Nothing from Nothing".
While not a big hit in the United States, only reaching #42 on the Billboard Hot 100, it was a big hit in Europe, among reaching #5 in the United Kingdom and remains a classic of '80s radio in that country.
This song has been referenced numerous times in popular culture, including songs with similar messages, such as Destiny's Child's "Bills, Bills, Bills", and by Eddie Murphy in one of his stand-up comedy shows.
