From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Slavic Runes ("Руница", Runica) is a hypothetical writing system, formerly used to write Slavic languages before the Christianization of the Slavs and the invention of the Cyrillic and Glagolitic alphabets. Historically, it has also been called "strokes and incisions" (OCS: чръты и рѣзы). Among historians, the hypothesis of "Slavic runes" was popular in the 19th century later finding its way into popular literature. Nowadays, the theory of a pre-Christian Slavic writing system is supported mostly by Slavic reconstructionists and neo-pagans, while any extant evidence of the existence of such a script is still lacking.

[edit] Written evidence

There are currently many conflicting pieces of evidence, some in favor of and others against the existence of Slavic Runes, almost exclusively in the form of written sources from contemporaries of that period, lacking any special details and objective descriptions.
