[edit] Fair use rationale in A Grief Observed

It is contended that the use of the image of a book cover qualifies as fair use when used in the article A Grief Observed for the following reasons.

  • This image is a low-resolution image of a book cover. This image is of lower resolution than the product itself.
  • This image does not limit the copyright holder's ability to profit from the original source, nor will it dilute the importance or recognition of the magazine in connection with its organization.
  • This image enhances the article in which it's displayed, as it provides an immediate relevance to the reader more capably than the textual description alone.
  • Use of the book cover visually identifies the book and its author in a manner that mere prose cannot, and meets all criteria in WP:NFCC.

[edit] Summary

This is the cover of C.S. Lewis' 1961 book. I personally own the book and I created the image by scanning the cover and resizing the image. Though I scanned the image, I realize that the copyright is held by HarperCollins Publishing Co. The image is low-resolution and is slightly different than a true digital scan due to the limitations of my desktop scanner. I feel that the image will enhance the article on the book, A Grief Observed, by showing it's place among Lewis' Christian writings (all have similar covers) and will add "eye-candy" to an otherwise dull article.
