Agnes Polreis was a sixteen-year-old girl central to a criminal case known as the Kaufmann house mystery. She was a servant hired by the family of Moses and Emma Kaufmann in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

The girl died under mysterious circumstances; the case was later referred to as the Kaufmann house mystery. Agnes was hired by the Kaufmanns in February of 1906. She died June 1, 1906. When her friends attended Agnes' funeral in Parkston, South Dakota, they were outraged after noticing the suspicious marks on Polreis' body. As a result, the body was later exhumed for an autopsy; and, Emma Kaufmann was arrested on June 10, 1906 under suspicion of murder. Mrs. Kaufmann was found guilty of manslaughter; but, she had to be retried as a result of misconduct by the prosecuting attorney. Mrs. Kaufmann was fined one hundred dollars after being charged with assault and battery.
