Hi, I reverted your edit to Gaussian beam. It was correct as written. At radius w(z), the amplitude is 1 / e of the on-axis value, and the intensity is 1 / e2 of its on-axis value. (Since intensity is proportional to the square of amplitude.) The quantity w2(z) is simply the value of w(z) squared. It has no other physical significance.--Srleffler 18:27, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
