i disagree with a merging of the categories. Not all african states were monarchies. Most definately were (in at least as far as having a king), but there were others that were not. Prime example is the Aro Confederacy. Definately not a traditional monarchy. Many of the governments were at least semi-elective. Asanteman, Kongo, the Wolof Empire and the Mali Empire all elected their leaders (some being kings others being full fledged emperors).Scott Free 12:47, 18 September 2007 (UTC)
