African-American Film Critics Association

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The African-American Film Critics Association is a group of African-American film critics that give awards for excellence in film at the end of each year.

Founded in 2003, by journalists Gil Robertson IV and Shawn Edwards, the association is committed to creating awareness platforms for films with universal appeal to the black community and films produced, written, directed and starring people of African descent. The association also actively reviews the quality and standards of cinema overall, with a particular emphasis on films about the black experience.[citation needed]

The organization gives out annual Best Actor and Actress awards, a Special Achievement honor, plus a Top 10 list of films released during a calendar year.
