AFL Queensland

AFL Queensland (AFLQ) is the governing body of Australian rules football in the state of Queensland. It was formed in 2000 after the previous governing body for the sport in Queensland, the Queensland Australian Football League (QAFL), went into voluntary liquidation.

[edit] Affiliated Leagues

The premier league in Queensland is a two division semi-professional Australian rules competition, Australian Football League Queensland State League (AFLQSL) operating out of South East Queensland this was formerly known as Queensland State Football League or the QSL it was deemed too similar to the soccer abbreviations. The organisation also runs the multi-division amateur AFLQ State Association out of South East Queensland. Other regional leagues include:

All Regions include their own affiliated junior Leagues.

[edit] Representative Side

The Queensland Scorpions are the state representative side and include under 16s, under 18s and open age groups and compete at the National State Championships.

The Country Kookaburras represent the regional areas outside of South East Queensland, have under 14's , 16s, under 18s and open age groups and compete at the Australian Country Championships.

Due to the 2005 alignment with AFL PNG, both sides can also include players from Papua New Guinea.

The league's offices are currently based at Lions Football Park (also known as Giffin Park), Coorparoo, and this is where most finals matches have been played from 1998. However, the AFLQ State League Grand Final was once again played at the Gabba in 2005, marking the centenary of the first Grand Final played at the ground when City defeated Valley in 1905.

The Grogan Medal is awarded to the best and fairest in home and away rounds of each season's competition. The medal has been awarded since 1946.

On 16 June 2003, the Queensland Team of the Century was announced at a gala function staged by AFLQ at the Brisbane Convention Centre.
