- Niels Bohr - Goalkeeper for Akademisk Boldklub in Denmark.
- Harald Bohr - Played for Akademisk Boldklub and the Danish national football team, won silver at the 1908 Summer Olympics.
- Albert Camus - Goalkeeper for University of Algiers, had to end his career after catching tuberculosis. Would likely have made the Algeria national football team.
- Goran Ivanisevic - Played for Hajduk Split's youth academy, but decided to play tennis instead.
- Pope John Paul II - Goalkeeper in his early days, quit football in order to focus on his religion.
- Vladimir Nabokov - Goalkeeper during his time at Cambridge
- Dmitri Shostakovich - Qualified football referee

Five active Dutch football (soccer) clubs have never been relegated from the Eredivisie:
- Ajax: 1954 - present.
- Feyenoord: 1954 - present.
- PSV: 1954 - present.
- RKC:
1988 - presentrelegated in 2007. - Roda JC: 1973 - present.
Three active Dutch professional football clubs have never won promotion to the Eredivisie:
- FC Emmen, became professional in 1985.
- TOP Oss, became professional in 1955, returned to the amateur ranks in 1957 and became professional again in 1991.
- FC Omniworld, became professional in 2005.
