If it's "improved", then it is still "deflate"? Or is it in fact a different compression algorithm, perhaps one that shares similarities with deflate? -- Antaeus Feldspar 23:49, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Deflate is a specification for a stream format and/or decompressor. Which method is used to create the compressed stream does not matter, as long as it valid and compliant. The situation is similar MPEG encoders; there are many products on the market, all of which will produce a valid MPEG compressed stream—and which any decoder can decompress. An other examples might be web-pages; the choice of creator (a Web-authoring tool) and viewer (a Web-browser) do not matter, as long as the part in the middle is valid HTML.
