[edit] Bio
" Ray King was born in Philadelphia, PA, on July 4, 1950. In his early twenties, he apprenticed with a stained glass artist. In 1975, he received a Louis C. Tiffany Fellowship to travel to England and study with master stained glass artist, Patrick Reyntiens at the Burleighfield House Trust in Buckinghampshire.
When he returned, he became involved with the craft art movement of the mid-1970s. His modern glass creations were exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in New York, the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art in Sapporo, Japan, and other venues throughout America and Europe.
The scale and scope of his art has evolved dramatically over the years as King moved into the three-dimensional / public art realm. His repertoire of materials has expanded to include holographic and laser-etched, light-responsive laminate films, and he has mastered the use of advanced 3-D computer technology that allows him to design elaborately engineered sculptures. His unique tectonic, site-specific works are in demand by universities, municipal art commissions and corporations around the world." [1]
[edit] About His Work
"The play of light and color has been a major theme in my artwork. I use the natural phenomena of light as it interacts with glass and optics as an art medium. By creating dynamic interactions with the sun and refracting light into colors-- rainbow- like emanations that shift and change as the veiwer moves or as the light source changes-- my hope is to create a magical environment that apeals to veiwer's sense of wonderment and delight, and inspires them to feel a greater connection to the cosmos.
My artwork also uses mathematics and sacred geometry, scaled to the golden mean, to add a humanistic element and proportion to public art. Using advanced computer programs and mathematical formula, I design 3- dimensional shapes and patterns that are inspired by forms found in nature. These forms are astoundingly complex and yet simple and elegant, primative, yet futuristic." [2]
