Academy of Television Arts & Sciences

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS) is the Los Angeles- organization which awards the Primetime Emmys. ATAS also houses the Los Angeles Emmy Awards. ATAS was founded in 1946. They are also the creators of the Television Hall of Fame.

The ATAS Foundation houses The Archive of American Television, housing interviews with over 475 luminaries of the U.S. television industry, many of which are available on Google Video.

ATAS was formerly part of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (created in 1955), based in New York, which distributes Emmy Awards in various categories including Daytime, Sports, News and Documentary and Public Service. NATAS supervised the primetime Emmy Awards until a split between the East and West memberships in the 1970s led to ATAS. While ATAS runs the primetime Emmys, NATAS supervises the Daytime Emmys in coordination with ATAS, and the other national Emmy honors.
