[edit] UnderstandMexico.com

Hi Jon, A bit of project background, the intent of the project is to catalog all investment information on a state by state and city by city basis in Mexico. Currently this information is mostly inaccessible on the web, so if you are a small company looking to invest, usually you have to go to a consulting firm and pay through the nose (for publicly available information). UnderstandMexico.com eventually will be a user generated source of free information (including free of marketing) about investing in Mexico.
After reading the guidelines on external links it seems I can possibly violate two rules:
  1. I am the owner of the site, so any external link I put to it is promoting the site
  2. There is not enough information on a given page to warrant linking to it from it's corresponding Wikipedia page
The first item is unresolvable, but in my view the second item is more important. Once I've completed gathering information from the investment promotion agency/government agency for a given city or state, have the contact info for at least a few of the key private companies (legal, real estate, maquila association, etc.) and have a well written introduction then linking would seem appropriate? For an example of what a mostly finished page looks like see Baj California Let me know what you think regarding how I should approach Wikipedia. Aburda (talk) 04:54, 23 January 2008 (UTC)
It is better to add content to articles than links to external sites. You might consider using your original sources to create an investment-related article for Wikipedia that covers each state of Mexico. You have the kind of expertise that can really benefit Wikipedia. Most experienced editors — and I am one of those — will consider insertion of links to your own site as an unacceptable conflict of interest (please consider removing those that you already placed so others don't need to do it for you). It is acceptable for you to list your site on the Talk (or discussion) page of an article and ask other neutral editors to consider your site and they will place the link if they find merit. Typically this won't happen and one shouldn't consider lack of discussion as permission to place it. Another way to look at the problem is that you are tying to fix up your site so Wikipedia will link to it (which primarily benefits your site); it is much better if editors spend time fixing up Wikipedia so the information is here and we avoid linking to other sites (which primarily benefits Wikipedia and its readers). Thanks for the info. Half of the website involves Encyclopaedic like articles that when they are ready I'll make GFDL, i.e. an article on how the Harmonized Tariff System works. The other (and more important) half of the site is a bit more like the DMOZ project. Currently most Mexican websites related to manufacturing services and investment promotion are done in flash (or are just so un-seo'd that google can't read them or they don't exist at all). I'm trying to build a one stop site for investors using collaborative technologies. So to make a long story short, Wikipedians don't really want me promoting the list of most important contacts for investment for each Mexican city on Wikipedia articles. A link in the references section of relevant articles would seem more appropriate but for now, I'll let Wikipedia sit, possibly later going the talk page route. Thanks again for the info. Hey Aburda, as your upper comments said, being the owner of the "UnderstandMexico" site turns your edits as a try to promote your site. What about the other Mexican states, I did not see link to your site in them, the goverment itself has its own site for invesment (investinbaja). Try to add your site link in each state or in the "Mexico"/"Economy of Mexico" articles, so, each state will have a similar format. I'm not opposing to add your site if the other Mexican states follow the same format. JC (talk) 7:10, 6 March 2008 (PST)

Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a collection of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include (but are not limited to) links to personal web sites, links to web sites with which you are affiliated, and links that attract visitors to a web site or promote a product. See the external links guideline and spam guideline for further explanations. Since Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, external links do not alter search engine rankings. If you feel the link should be added to the article, please discuss it on the article's talk page rather than re-adding it. Thank you. JonHarder talk 01:51, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
