TODAY i WAS going through the one best and most popular Indian Newspaper, and came to know anbout the forged identities people (terrorists ) have been using to get connectivity. i was confused (rather demotivated) to see the depth covered by the story as the same happens to be less than 10 % or so. There might be gurus around who could even make it less than 1% also. Its just the logical divide and technical gaps in terms of right information that is creating the leaks. Focus on the core issue guys, and things will automatically get in place.
A cellphone is no longer a cellphone, it comes with a full fledged Operating System, processor, and so many other features making it a subset of a computer. And the Key players as of today happen to be ARM & Symbian and not Microsoft &/or Intel. Then come so many parameters and endless combinatios and compliances which is much beyond to explain in 1 article. In one of my earlier Organizations, we had imported more than 100 devices and got them enabled for service which our so called Service providers could not do.
GSM is definitely much more popular but lesser prone to security implications/enforcements. That's one of the problems when technologies themselves are evolving at such an incredible pace, and the demanding customers accompanied by the cut-throat competition among service providers is adding to whatever is happening. Let us accept that a cell-phone is not a radio, but a full fledged computer, which can be used as a full fledged scanner also. And its not just local stuff, you can ask anyone in downtown area (LA/NY) of so many junkies who do the same, and you just need to buy a card use it and then throw it. It works, yes it really does.
CDMA on the other hand happens to be a better solution (at least from the security perspective) as the Operator has a controlled service & there are enough mechanisms to ensure/prevent exploitation. The darker side on CDMA is that both the major players in India are mostly full of junk brains, who themselves do have huge gaps in their understanding. And there is a dire need to come up and educate people on the various threats that one can undergo and at least provide them the precautionary tips. The administrative/legal system is another warped out system. I had once lost my CDMA mobile phone, and the guy who stole it kept using it while I kept running between reliance web world, & Police Station (Sector - 58) for an Fir. And the thief kept on using it and always abused me whenever I tried to reach him. Webworld insisted of a copy of fir, and the cops made fun made mockery you when I went to file an fir. And then I feel insulted & kept on paying the bills, otherwise Reliance would start sending guys to your home for collecting money and making threatening calls. One cannot help it as we are human beings living in a barberic world.
