Emir Abdul Madzhid is the militant leader of the Shariat Jamaat of the Caucasian Front in the Second Chechen War, in the volatile southern Russian republic of Dagestan. He was the deputy of Rappani Khalilov until his death in September 2007. He was then appointed the new leader of the Shariat Jamaat by the orders of Dokka Umarov.
[edit] Early militant activity
According to Kavkaz Center, Abdul Madzhid began his wartime career during the Second Chechen War where he fought in volunteer units and then in the armed forces of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria in the units of Eastern Front in Chechnya. His onetime participation in the eastern Chechen front suggests that he was trained in Ibn al-Khattab's camps.[1][2]
[edit] Leader of Dagestani insurgency
After Rappani's death, Madzhid was appointed the new leader of the Shariat Jamaat on the orders of Dokka Umarov, former president of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria and the current leader of the Caucasus Emirate. He was credited for bringing order to the resistance cells spread across the republic right after Rappani's death, and receive the oaths of fealty from the many various detachments of the Shariat Jamaat. Even though he was born in Dagestan, Madzhid is closely connected with the men who are fighting in the borderlands of Chechnya, which makes it possible for him to find support among the Chechens and gives him an advantage in his new role as Jamaat leader.[3]
