A Woman of Substance was a 1984 miniseries adapted by Lee Langley from the book of the same name by author Barbara Taylor Bradford.
Set at the start of the twentieth century, it tells the story of Emma (played by Jenny Seagrove when younger and Deborah Kerr when older).
It also starred Liam Neeson as Shane "Blackie" O'Neil, an Irish navvy who goes to work at Fairley Hall.
The series was filmed in the North East of England, and locations included Richmond for most of the Armley, and the main shop front of the Emma Harte emporium.[citation needed]
