A tramway junction can be radio-controlled by a tram driver. The junction locks in the position the driver wants, and can even give information on its position to driver.

The junction might be operated manually in case of power failure. The junctions can be heated to avoid freezing in cold regions. The picture shows that the tracks are typically embedded to road. Therefore special brush cars or trucks regularly clear the groove from sand, leaves, snow, and litter.
