UK households: a longitudinal study

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

UK households: a longitudinal study (UKHLS) is a future panel survey. In May 2007 the Economic and Social Research Council, the survey's main funder, announced that UKHLS will be led by the Institute for Social and Economic Research of the University of Essex, the winner of the corresponding competition for tender. It will be the largest panel survey in the world and thus an important instrument for social and economic research. Its sample size will be 40,000 households from the United Kingdom or approx. 100,000 individuals. Data collection, or fieldwork, is scheduled to begin in 2008. It is expected to follow and interview annually the members of the original households (and their newly formed households, if applicable) for at least 20 years.

UKHLS will incorporate the British Household Panel Survey, carried out at the Institute for Social and Economic Research of the University of Essex since 1991.

As a panel survey, UKHLS will be a form of longitudinal study.

(Note: Initially, the proposed name of the UKHLS was UK Longitudinal Household Study, or UKLHS -- note the difference in the abbreviation. The name currently used by the Economic and Social Research Council is UK households: a longitudinal study. The name currently used by the Institute for Social and Economic Research is UK Household Longitudinal Study. Since fieldwork has not yet started, the name may change again.)
