A Gangster and a Gentleman is Yonkers, New York rapper Styles P's solo debut after a series of three LOX albums and three Ruff Ryder volumes. Styles is the second to be debuted solo, after Jadakiss, and before the other member of the LOX, Sheek Louch.
The album is dominated by the "Ruff Ryder" mood that the label always propells, as heard in DMX albums. However, this selection of instrumentals can more specifically be described as a reflection of the temperament of Styles P. Duality in the persona of Styles P. is equally presented lyrically and instrumentally throughout his album. The track "A Gangster & A Gentleman" switches back and forth from a hefty beatless hook to a quieter and pensive beat during Styles P's 16 bars. "Soul Clap," "I'm A Ruffryder," and "Y'all Don't Wanna F***" delivers "gangster" with the authority of M.O.P. and "Black Magic," "We Thugs," "Lick Shots," and "My Brother" gentles down to show the positive.
It was certified Gold by RIAA on October 11, 2002.[1]
