Be-1
Type Experimental
Manufacturer Beriev
Maiden flight 1964

The Beriev Be-1 was an experimental aircraft built to investigate the performance of wing in ground effect vehicles. The single-seat aircraft was mounted between two floats, connected by a very low aspect-ratio wing. Small normal wings extended outside the floats. The Be-1 was powered by a single turbojet mounted above the wing. Testing completed using the Be-1 led to the development of the much larger VVA-14.

In 1956, aircraft designer Robert Ludvigovich Bartini presented the Beriev design bureau with his proposal for a wing in ground effect vehicle project. Beriev developed the small scale test vehicle designated Be-1 in order to investigate the stability, control and performance of the design.

This looked vaguely like a jet fighter, with a front cockpit, large centroplan (central wing) with a turbojet on top, twin floats, outer wings and twin fins and rudders. Under each float was a surfacepiercing V-type hydrofoil, which was not to be a feature of the full-scale vehicle.
