[edit] Please get a user name

If you would choose a username for yourself, people would be able to discuss your edits with you and quite possibly reach a mutually acceptable compromise. For as long a you just use an anonymous IP address, there is a tendency to revert your edits without further discussion. For example:

[edit] Gort

You may not approve of what the placenames commission has done, but Wiki may only reflect the legal position. I guess you could write a "name dispute" article along the lines of Derry/Londonderry name dispute.

[edit] Irish names in the Kinvara article

If you want to write an article about Galway bay and add that it is called Loch Lurgain in Irish, that is perfectly valid. What (by convention) you can't do is sprinkle en:wiki artciles with irish names for every location mentioned, any more than you can('t) sprinkle ga:wiki with English names for every location mentioned.

[edit] Cathair na Gaillimhe

Please read History of Galway to see why your version is not correct. The word "cathair" is the spelling as Gaeilge of Caher: the name was recycled way back to describe the Norman walled towns. (before the normans, it was Dún Béal Gaillimhe). The translation to "city" is much more recent. --Red King 19:35, 30 August 2005 (UTC)

You assert that "Cathair na Gaillimhe" is a recent creation. Where is your evidence? Before the Normans fortified it, it was "Dún Bhun na Gaillimhe" - the fort at the end (mouth) of the Gaillimh. When it acquired a stone wall, it became a Caher, becuase that is how Irish people described stone forts. The conventional translation you use is based on lack of understanding of the history and assumptions about anglicisations. --Red King 17:06, 22 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Continued obscenities and personal attacks

Warning: Please do not add obscenities to Wikipedia. Injecting unnecessary profanities, racially or sexually abusive comments, or provocative pictures to articles or user pages offends many people. Wikipedia treats such actions as vandalism and blocks people from editing for such repeated vandalism. If you wish your edits and/or position to be considered with any level of gravitas, you need to refrain from these (profanity laden) personal attacks. If they continue, you will be blocked. This is your last warning. If you continue to make personal attacks, you will be blocked for disruption. - Alison 19:12, 19 December 2006 (UTC)
