"There is no controversy" = "Everyone (who matters) agrees with me." That is not a mature answer. When there is a pronunciation which has been traditional for centuries, a recent fad which may or may not continue does not "cancel out" the traditional practice. In the mid 1970s, when the English-speaking world's attention began to turn more towards China, some TV reporters suddenly started saying "Beizhing" (zh as in pleasure) instead of "jing" (as in jingle) which one would have thought to be rather obvious from the spelling. Now, as far as I know, most modern young intellectuals might have picked this up and say "Beizhing", but anybody who knows any Chinese knows that that is wrong. Since a billion Chinese still say "Beijing", this is certainly not a case of clinging to an outmoded usage. And speaking of numbers, how successful have you been in persuading the huge world-wide Francophone community to stop pronouncing Celt as "selt"? They are not so confused about their own spelling system as are the Anglophones; I think they will never agree to "kelt" unless it is spelled as Kelt. --- Jakob Dempsey
