[edit] Joy Division

How in the name of God could 42 be a definive figure. What if someone came late/left early? Are there fractions involved in the calculation? You yourself asked for a cite! 35-40 is cited. You are testing good faith here. Ceoil 23:10, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

Just to say that subtle vandalism is still vandalism, and to warn you that you will be blocked from editing if you continue in the way that you are. I note above you have a history of this kind of thing. Reverting from sourced versions and then adding fact tags? Reverting multiple complex edits to reinstate an unsourced claim? Please. Aha, a chance to explain a bit more fully. I have been reverting some edits to Joy Division very recently - but I don't know anything about all the other edits on this page ... I probably get allocated a different IP address whenever I log on.

I have been making my edits in good faith. The problem is someone made a sweeping load of edits which contained incorrect facts - Bernard's father was NOT called Allbrecht and the just released book explains the whole story. Whoever added that Bernard took Allbrecht because it was his father's name must have made it up. It simply isn't true and as far as I am aware it isn't advanced as a theory in any books or publications. Even if it was, the new and much publicised book states that this is wrong. Other parts of the initial lengthy edit are worrysom too in that they appear to have been done by someone who is new to the subject. They had for example removed bits of text which they deemed irrelevent ... like Hooky uses a clone theory pedal. However, this is actually quite important as for nigh on three decades people speculated on how he got that bass sound and it was an "insider secret" in the band if you like. This is therefore exactly the sort of fact someeone is likely to try and look up in Wikipedia. So removing it is counter productive. Other bits of recently unearthed info were removed too.

OK, on to the number 42. IMHO that number is exact which I think implies someon who knew what they were writing about it put it up there but didn't cite the source. Surely it is better to state that citation is needed rather than thinking "Oh, I don't know how it could be 42 ... I know I'll make it 30 to 40 and never mind the fact that 42 isn't in that range". IMHO that is simply making up facts to replace one that the author thinks may not necesssarily be true. Surely you only replace a figure if you know the actual figure? I also looked at the source (must admit I had missed it, d'oh) The Free Trade Hall page on Wikipedia ... but that doesn't say 35 to 40 either. And if it did who's to say it's right instead of the 42 that's quoted on this page? Surely better to leave the 42 alone and try and find the right figure by asking for a citation?

So, I'm genuinely sorry if it appears like vandalism. That is completely the opposite of what I'm trying to do. However I do feel the initial lengthy edit that started all this off was done by someone who doesn't know the subject in depth and who has stormed in with incorrect/made up facts and then deleted some important info because they didn't appreciate its significance.

Misunderstanding here so. Bernards (step) father was a mr Dickins (his father was NOT called Allbrecht - your right there), any info on Hooky pedals I'll eat up; but the 42 vs. 35-40 is something i'm always take you yup on. Anyway, bridge, water. You have a lot of knowledge, and you seem like someone I could work with. Register an account and help out on the page? Ceoil 01:28, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
"the initial lengthy edit that started all this off was done by someone who doesn't know the subject in depth". I hope thats not me as I've been listening & reading since, um 85 or so. It was the 42 thing that got me, tbh. Ceoil 02:24, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
We can keep the links, but you can't go saying "the following..." in an encylopedia (self referencing is not on here). By the way:

I got rid of all that shite above - its fairly common for new users to get into a bit of a hassel early on (its so damn tempting to vandalise). The joy division page needs a lot of work yet, I'm hoping you will register and give us a hand. Ceoil 14:59, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
