In response to your question, every British Army land service weapon is given an L-number (with L standing for, obviously, land service). 98 just happens to be the L-number assigned to the cadet GP rifle (it's a pretty sequential thing). A1 means version/mark 1; SA80A2 weapons have been developed by Heckler & Koch which fixed many of the problems that BAE had with the A1, but they haven't made an L98A2 yet, nor will they in all likelihood.
