In the 70's, the fair used to come to my home town of Strood. We kids looked forward to this, though the adults used to moan about how poor the fair was compared to when they were younger. I can remember the rides (such as the Octopus and the Big Wheel). Also, I have many fond memories of the stalls (especially the air-rifles). For children, they had air rifles adapted to fire corks, but for the adults they had the real thing.

After the fair changed hands, the fair people wintered there. The annual fairs dwindled in size and, I understand now they don't hold any anymore (I moved away years ago, but my sister still lives in the same house in Grange Road, so the local news still filters through to me).

The one memory I have of the fair people wintering on the land was their dogs. They let them roam the streets. They were huge fierce things (Alsations and the like). They terrorised the local children. This was in the days before the laws changed concerning dangerous dogs.

Does anyone else have any memories of Strood Fair?
