[edit] Re: Rwanda
Regarding my edit, your pronunciation notation does not follow IPA notation standards. For instance, in IPA standard notation of pronunciation, ɹu (followed by . to indicate a syllable) stands for alveolar approximant+close back rounded vowel. I'm not sure how you got what you put in. - What I'm not clear on is where you got r(g), etc. I've never seen that kind of notation in the charts. Octane [improve me] 22.10.07 0046 (UTC)
- To my knowledge, there's no g sound. I've always heard it 'roo-wahn-dah', but I don't claim to be the most legitimate source out there. If you've got something official or more popular (the latter is much harder to judge, so I'd recommend just citing it or something) that says the g should be pronounced, by all means keep it. However, if it's non-standard, then it probably should be left out, or notated. with a <ref> tag. Octane [improve me] 23.10.07 0000 (UTC)
I'm curious where "ˈrgwanda" came from too. kwami (talk) 02:00, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks, that belongs in the Kinyarwanda article!
- Rgwanda was listed as an English pronunciation, but I'll put it back as Rwandan. I'd like to double check a couple things, though:
- In rgwanda, is the r a syllabic trill, a flap, or what? Is the gw [ɡw] or [ɡʷ]? And when the g doesn't appear, what is the rw? [ɾʷ]?
- Are gb, pk, and mŋ doubly articulated, as they are further west, or are they sequences? I assume mny, tkw are sequences, but it would be really interesting if they were not.
- Thanks, kwami (talk) 17:30, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

- [ɾw] is a sequence; [ɾʷ] is simultaneous: the [ɾ] is pronounced with rounded lips. There may be no [w] there at all. ([ʷ] is not iconic, since it suggests the sound is an off glide, which in general it is not, though in some languages it may be.) With true [ɾʷ], you may hear a w-like on glide if there's a preceding vowel. kwami (talk) 23:02, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
- Still, in [rgwanda] is that a flap or a trill? Is the [r] syllabic? I could see it changing from a flap in this environment. kwami (talk) 17:37, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry, I'm not clear on that. Non-syllabic in both [rw] and [rgw]? kwami (talk) 21:09, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
