[edit] Magnetic monopoles
Hi, A magnetic monopole is an isolated magnetic charge. For reasons that are not immediately clear, magnets always have a North and a South pole; unlike electric charges, they always seem to come in pairs. People have looked hard for monopoles in nature, and not found any, but there could still be a few sneaking about. Or they could be produced in particle accelerators artificially, and again people have looked for 40+ years, but never seen any. The possibility that they can exist,.. and could be made by the LHC,... but not by any of the previous accelerators,.... and are also dangerous ....? Can't absolutely rule it out. People have not worried about it overmuch heretofore, as far as I know.
I'm answering here because we're really not supposed to discuss anything but the article itself on talk pages, and I've probably annoyed the rest by answering a lot of questions lately. You might also look at the list of resources at the top of the LHC talk page. All the best, Wwheaton (talk) 02:24, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
