Welcome
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:
- The five pillars of Wikipedia
- How to edit a page
- Help pages
- Tutorial
- How to write a great article
- Manual of Style
Here are some other hints and tips:
- I would recommend that you get a username. You don't have to log in to read or edit articles on Wikipedia, but creating an account is quick, free and non-intrusive, requires no personal information, and there are many benefits of having a username. (If you edit without a username, your IP address is used to identify you instead.)
- When using talk pages, please sign your name at the end of your messages by typing four tildes (~~~~). This will automatically produce your username (or IP address) and the date.
If you have any questions, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or type {{helpme}} on this talk page and a user will help you as soon as possible. I will answer your questions as far as I can. Again, welcome, and I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian. GracenotesT § 06:03, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Thanks!
Hi there. This is a general warning on a few counts.
- Pretending to be a member of Wikimedia staff[1] is generally frowned upon, even if it is in the Sandbox, and even if you say "Wikipedia staff".
- Reverting a line in the sandbox[2] with the edit summary "rm nonsense" when it's not doing any harm (unlike your contribution, which could be considered to), is not disallowed but probably not a fantastic idea, and neither is giving the user a vandalism warning[3] even if they've already received one today (at least they're doing their test edits in the right place now).
- The Help Desk is for asking questions about using Wikipedia, not random chat/questions (even asking the make of Jimbo's car would technically be a Reference Desk question). While no-one's going to come down like a ton of bricks on a random person asking a slightly inappropriate question, excessive such abuse of the good faith of editors is likely to get you into trouble.
- While it's good that you are using edit summaries, the point is to put something in them that summarises the edit you've made. Very few of your edits could really be summarised as "sbbsbsb"[4].
- You might also want to read some of those links in the welcome message. You'll be amazed what you could learn.
Hopefully something I've said here will help you become a great Wikipedia contributor, and if not then at least you can't say you weren't warned. Cheers, Confusing Manifestation 07:02, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
