Hello All,

I'm doing a research paper on Richard Henry Dana who wrote "Two years before the Mast" and I'm trying to verify the location of the Hide Houses opposite the spot where the ships used to anchor to discharge the hides in San Diego Bay.

Several books I've read have mentioned LaPlaya as the place but I'm very skeptical about that location for several reasons. The narrow strip of land off shore from LaPlaya is not mentioned in Dana's book at all and I'm wondering if it is man made and was created after he left San Diego for Boston in 1836. (He returned for a short visit in 1859 and the strip of land was not there or least he didn't mention it if it was).

Does anyone know if this narrow strip of land is man made or not?

Thanks for any help.
